Requirements for Architecture Courses in Kenya

Before applying for a course in an institution in Kenya, several requirements will be needed from you. Institutions in Kenya do not just take students, they access them to know if they are fit in studying that particular course and some key requirements will be asked of them. Each particular institution has its own set of requirements that they ask for, but we will be dropping the general requirements that are needed it is advisable you get a bachelor’s degree in architecture as you can easily get a job with that degree than one with a diploma. You will need KCSE Mean Grade C- (Minus) or equivalent grade to subjects like Mathematics, Physics, English and chemistry before you can apply for this course.

A degree in architecture will take you four (4) years to study and upon completion, you will need to carry out an internship for any company of your choice which is registered in Kenya and will last for 18 months, under the duration of this internship you will be taught Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch Up, AutoCAD, computer-aided drawing and so many more.  Upon completion of the internship you will take up a professional examination for an architect in Kenya which will be administered by the board of ‘Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors’ and on successful completion of your practice, you can then apply for an operating license. Architects in Kenya make lots of money, a professional and licensed architect in Kenya can make about KSH 90,000 and above per month and after an internship, you can decide to work for a company or even open up your firm. An architect charges per drawing to be about 6 – 10% of the total construction plans and this is done in Nairobi because the drawing is so expensive and it takes lots of creativity and time to be able to come up with one. The services of an architect are always needed and required be it a small project or a big one, there are so many jobs offers available and if you position yourself well you can easily find jobs, the first thing is once you are out of school and you get your certificate to find a reputable company to work with even without pay and see how much you can learn while you are there. Experience matters a lot in this course so it’s necessary you have it.
